Update 11am: Civil Protection Department staff, the BCA and the OHSA are currently involved in a controlled demolition of the building next to Tania Flats which collapsed on Wednesday night. Several shops and a hotel on St George’s Road have also been evacuated as a precautionary measure.

The building which is right next door to the collapsed Tania Flats block in Paceville is expected to collapse imminently. The Maltese Herald can confirm that residents who live in adjacent buildings to the site have been moved out as a precaution. Persons who live close to the site and who spoke to us also confirmed that they expected to be moved out soon. A controlled demolition is not being excluded either, according to sources.
In a joint statement, the Building and Construction Authority and theย Occupational Health and Safety Authority stated that theyย continued to closely monitor the situation following the incident in Triq Paceville, St Julianโs, where a building adjacent to a demolition site collapsed.
As part of their ongoing commitment to public safety, the BCA and OHSA are taking further steps to safeguard the wellbeing of residents in neighbouring properties. In this respect, and in coordination with the Police, the Civil Protection Department (CPD) and Mater Deiโs Hospital Accident and Emergency Unit, a precautionary evacuation exercise is being carried out for additional properties within the affected perimeter, and temporary alternative accommodation is offered.
The BCA and OHSA said that they remain present on site and will continue to provide all necessary assistance to the persons impacted by this incident. They said that they are fully committed to supporting residents and ensuring that all safety measures are maintained.
