Prime Minister Robert Abela desperately needs to get Manoel Island right for the sake of just doing something right and correct after being very busy in the past few years getting things wrong by protecting his criminal friends and tarnishing the rule-of-law. The Premier also needs people forget about the ongoing building and construction crisis so doing the right about Manoel Island should be very timely.
Let’s put some things in perspective. Malta has an extensive crisis and building and this is partly because of reckless and corrupt planning executives like Johann Buttigieg and consultants like Robert Musumeci who successfully removed many building and planning regulations to turn the construction industry into a Jungle Rules regime. The Maltese construction industry has had a free hand for a very long time and its impunity and recklessness was exacerbated in the past few years under successive Labour governments.
The reckless Jungle Rules regime in construction and planning hasn’t just enabled a housing crisis for the younger generations, it has also eradicated many green areas, and brought construction havoc in towns and villages. There are many government officials and politicians who are responsible for the current state of affairs that has been brought by a series of actions that totally disregarded actual planning.
This is not just about health and safety standards in building and construction: the problem is encompassing all government entities and policies related to construction and planning.ย Labour is in the hands of its donors who are mostly construction and tourism industry magnates. Labour can easily get it right on Manoel Island because the developers are incidentally are major donors of the Nationalist Party. On everything else related to construction and planning, Jungle Rules will persist.
