On Saturday evening, police in Belgrade attacked protests with batons and tear gas as the city was filled with protesters demanding the President and the government to resign. However protesters returned in large numbers on Sunday morning and by night-time blocked most of the city. Protests in other towns and cities were also ongoing during the night.
Serbs have taken to the streets in record numbers to protest against the government following a tragic incident at a train station in Novi Sad, where a ceiling collapsed, leaving up to sixteen people dead. Protests initially started in Novi Sad by university students who were quickly met with violence and brutality by pro-government thugs. The violent reactions of the government only galvanised many other Serbs to join the protests.
For many Serbs, the Novi Sad tragedy represents the culmination of widespread government corruption that is holding the country back and leaving many victims behind. Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic is also being accused of rigging the last elections and protests have been ongoing ever since. Despite large numbers currently opposing the government, the Serbian political opposition remains very fractured and disunited.
