Syrian President thanks US and Turkey for mediating ceasefire with Israel: airstrikes take a pause

Yesterday, in a speech delivered to the Syrian public, President Ahmed al-Sharaa thanked the US and Turkey for putting pressure on Israel to end its airstrikes against the Syrian Army. Israel has been striking Syrian military targets following an intervention by the Syrian Army to quell a secessionist and separatist movement by Druze militias in the south of Syria.

Israel is currently attempting to destablise Syria with internal rivalries following its invasion of the Quneitra Governate in December last year. Israeli airstrikes on Syria have taken a pause since yesterday night. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the US was engaged with all parties to put this conflict to an end.

The Syrian Army has kept making further gains in the Suwayda province during the night after a deal was signed with Druze militia units to lay down their weapons. A Druze separatist run by Hikmat al-Hijri is refusing to lay down its weapons and wants to keep fighting. The Syrian government is accusing Hikmat al-Hijri’s group, which receives backing from Israel, of being involved in the illegal captagon trade.
