US Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy for Syria, Thomas Barrack, has once again reiterated US support for a unified Syria and blamed Israel for unnecessarily contributing to instability in the country. Ambassador Barrack made his remarks in Beirut, Lebanon, in an exclusive interview with the Associated Press.
The US Ambassador had previously made similar remarks in the context of the deal he brokered between the Syrian government and the SDF when he said that federalism in Syria is not an option.
In Beirut, Ambassador Barrack met with Druze leader Walid Jumblatt who has also supported the efforts of the Syrian government to unite the country.
Israel has backed an armed separatist insurrection by Druze militants in the Suwayda Governate and was eventually pressured by the US to withhold from conducting further airstrikes in Syria in support of Druze separatists. Sectarian violence from both Arabs and Druze militias took place.
Clashes between Druze separatists and Arab Bedouins supporting the government in Suwayda have continued yesterday. Government forces were forced to withdraw from Suwayda by Israeli airstrikes but they are gradually coming back to the countryside of the governate to uphold a ceasefire agreement.
