News headlines are currently filled with stories about Francine Farrugia who is being charged in Court for embezzling up to €2.3 million from MCAST where she worked as a financial manager. Apart from buying properties, jewelry and luxury items, during the time she was defrauding the government, she also took a series of holidays some of which are quite expensive for a government employee. She also owned a post-office in Siġġiewi which has now been closed.
Francine Farrugia traveled to Tanzania and Tibet among the places she visited from 2023 to 2024. She didn’t seem to make much effort to hide her illicit gains in her eagerness to share her travels with her friends.
For the Maltese government, €2.3 million is a lot of money. It takes a great deal of narcissism and psychopathy to loot so much from the Maltese public purse, small as it is, but I think I understand where she may have got the example from.
