It’s been a remarkable week for Malta’s turtle nesting season, with another nest springing to life – this time at Ramla Bay in Gozo. On the first night of activity, 20 tiny loggerhead turtle hatchlings made their way to the sea under the glow of the moon, marking yet another milestone in this record-breaking year for turtle conservation.
The Ramla hatching follows closely on the heels of the second nest at Mellieħa Bay, where 21 hatchlings safely reached the water just a day earlier. The season began with the Ġnejna Bay nest, which saw 26 hatchlings emerge on the first night and later celebrated the successful release of all 79 hatchlings – a powerful start to this year’s efforts.
As more nests are expected to hatch in the coming weeks, the public’s role in safeguarding these events is crucial. At Ramla Bay, visitors are being urged to:
– Keep noise to a minimum
– Avoid bright lights near the nesting area
– Follow instructions from on-site volunteers
The Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) and Nature Trust – FEE Malta (NTM), supported by dedicated volunteers, continue to monitor and protect each active nest to give these ancient mariners the best possible start to life.
Every hatchling represents hope for the future of this endangered species. With community support and careful conservation, these tiny travellers have a fighting chance to return to our shores in the decades to come.
