Final turtle nest of the season begins to hatch at Ramla l-Ħamra

The last turtle nest of this year’s record season has begun to hatch at Ramla l-Ħamra in Gozo, marking the closing chapter of an extraordinary summer for marine conservation.

During the night, more than 40 loggerhead hatchlings emerged from the sand and made their way to the sea, supported by the efforts of Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) officials and Nature Trust – FEE Malta volunteers who have safeguarded the nests throughout the season.

Visitors to Ramla Bay are being reminded to respect the nesting site by keeping noise to a minimum, avoiding the use of bright lights near the area, and following the guidance of on-site volunteers. These simple actions are crucial in ensuring hatchlings do not become disoriented on their first journey to the sea.

This hatching marks the beginning of the end of the turtle nesting season in Malta and Gozo – a summer that has seen a record number of nests and hatchlings, highlighting the islands’ growing importance as a breeding ground for this endangered species.
