New PN Leader Alex Borg closes gap substantially over Labour

The latest survey just published on MaltaToday shows the PN within just 8364 votes of Labour. This result is strikingly similar to the 2024 MEP Elections result where the PL won with an 8400 vote margin.

This remarkable result comes a month after Alex Borg was elected PN leader and could be attributed to a honeymoon period for the Gozitan.

A history of surveys this year has shown the PL consistently gaining ground so this latest poll is a stark reversal of fortunes. In February, pollster Vincent Marmara published a survey showing the PL ahead by 15,800 votes.

Various Malta Today surveys showed the PN losing support from an advantage of 11,000 votes in September 2024 to a massive deficit of 39,000 votes in June this year.

The latter survey led to the resignation of PN leader Bernard Grech and the election of Alex Borg after a long summer campaign. The eventual election saw Borg win by only 44 votes.

Vincent Marmara published a survey yesterday where he showed the PL ahead by 25,000 votes. Marmara uses the Computational Imputation Technique were all undecided voters are given a preference. He has been wrong before, most notably in the MEP elections where he predicted a 27k vote Labour victory only for that to be slashed to 8400 votes.

On a trust rating level Borg has cut the gap to 13 points compared to Robert Abela. According to Marmara the rating gap is even less with Abela leading by only 8 points.

It remains to be seen whether this is a trend and that the PN will continue eating into Labour’s lead.
