Government and ENGOs lock horns over planning reform

Environmental NGOs are insisting with the government to withdraw its proposed planning reforms while the government keeps resisting these calls, saying that improvements to the laws will be enough. The Ramblers Association, one of the environmental groups leading the opposition to what its President described as the most corrupt planning reform in history, said that the government is persisting with this diabolical reform to appease the big donors of the Labour Party.

Apart from pushing forward its Jungle Rules planning reforms, the government has also opposed the PN’s proposal to entrench constitutional protections to the environment, projecting itself in public as the party which is consistently putting the environment at the bottom of its priority list.

The newly appointed Leader of the Opposition Alex Borgย has made the environment as one of his top priorities, creating an unusual alliance between environmental NGOs and the Nationalist Opposition against a government which seems to be going to extreme lengths to dismantle all environmental laws and regulations.

Meanwhile, the number of people concerned about the environment is increasing making the Labour government ever more out of touch with the realities and perspectives of the general public. The environment is set to become increasingly important in political discourse as public concern grows, while Labour is going against the trend and effectively positioning itself as the party of the past.
