The Russian press has overwhelmingly praised the US Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth for wearing a Russian tricolour tie during the meeting at the White House with President Zelensky. Vice-President JD Vance trolled critics telling them that those were the American colours. Although some outlets do sell and promote the Russian tricolour as “American colours” this is highly unusual and not the convention.
We could confirm that no US military branch makes use of the American colours in the same order of the Russian tricolour.
During the meeting at the White House, President Trump demanded with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky to capitulate to Russia, but President Zelensky refused the offer.
This is not the first time that the Secretary of War has used the Russian tricolour. In a statement issued by the Department of War earlier this year, the statement displayed the Russian flag instead of the US flag.
Pete Hegseth is a fan of far-right imagery that has been appropriated from European symbols by the contemporary far-right in the US. This kind of imagery includes Medieval Crusader’s and European Knights imagery – Pete Hegseth has a tattoo on his chest of a Jerusalem Cross used by the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem. He also has a tattoo in Arabic with the word “Kafir” meaning “infidel” or “heretic”. Russian symbols are often used by the contemporary far-right as they symbolise to them a European historical image of the White Christian warriors, and this symbolism supposedly contrasts from what the far-right considers the contemporary liberal and “degenerate” symbolism such as the Gay Pride flag.
