The European Union has issued a statement on the ongoing ethnic cleansing campaign by the Rapid Support Forces in Al-Fashir. The statement by the EU said that the ongoing massacres against civilians in Al-Fashir underscore the brutality of the Rapid Support Forces, but the EU did not condemn the genocidal group. The RSF, previously known as the “Janjaweed” are also responsible for the genocide in Darfur of the early 2000s.
The EU instead appealed to all parties in what it describes as “the conflict” to deescalate in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2736. The EU however also said that it is currently financing the gathering of information about the ongoing massacres in Al-Fashir to ensure accountability. The EU is providing up to €270 million in relief and aid to Sudan this year making it one of Sudan’s biggest external donors.
It is still not understood how the Rapid Support Forces will protect the same civilians they are ethnically-cleansing.
Countries which have so far explicitly condemned the RSF include Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar. Germany issued a statement similar to the EU’s and did not condemn the RSF.
