Zelensky and Macron talk peace in Paris as the US keeps up pressure

Two weeks after being in Paris to sign a large purchase of Mirage fighter jets, Ukraine’s President Volodomyr Zelensky was back in Paris yesterday to discuss the US-Kremlin proposed capitulation pact for Ukraine. President Macron said that previous to President Zelenky’s meeting, the Colaition of the Willing held a meeting in which Us Secretary Marco Rubio was present for the first time.

Preisdent Macron said that Russia shows no sign of stopping its attacks on Ukraine and its civilians which are only escalating. President Macron said that for any peace, Ukraine needed long-term security guarantees and he was encouraging the US to commit to them.Pushing back against Russia is also in Europe’s interest, President Macron said. The French President also expects Russia to soften its position with the latest US sanctions against its major oil companies.

President Zelensky thanked France for its support. He said that the war has to end in a dignified manner and that security guarantees are also important for Europe. He said that Russia has broken down all rpevious attempts at negotiations and peac-ekeeping and this is why Ukraien needs strong peace guarantees. Questioned by the press on territorial concessions, President Zelensky said that this was the most difficult issue and it was discussed for six hours during the meeting in Miami. Talks between Ukrainian and US officials have also continued.

Vladimir Putin has recently signed a decree orderign the Russification of Russian occuppied territories in Ukraine, namely Crimea and the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson.

The US and Russia are objecting to Ukraine joining NATO.

President Zelensky travelled to Ireland following his meeting with President Macron in Paris while US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to meet Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
