Animal rights media outlet Vuċi Għall-Annimali has demanded the authorities to ensure that wild animals of the contractor currently facing fraud charges in court, are shipped to animal sanctuaries and not to commercial zoos.
The contractor in question, Martin Farrugia (featured above), owns a building housing big cats and the menagerie was built on what previously was agricultural land. Martin Farrugia’s site currently hosts the lions that were previously abandoned by Christian Borg.
Vuċi Għall-Annimali said that the situation should not be commercialised and any decision should be taken in the interest of the animals.
Martin Farrugia is being charged in Court with a VAT-carousel fraud case amounting up to €62 million in tax arrears and up to €27 million in undeclared income. He is also being charged of money-laundering and tax evasion along with his partner Henriette Cassar. More details about the case here.
