A security threat was declared at the British base of Akrotiri in Cyprus earlier today, afterr an Iranian Shahed drone struck the base but no casualties were reported. The incident has been confirmed by the President of Cyprus.
The base is usually used as a launchpad for US fighter-jets to conduct missions against Iran when Iran fires missiles against Israel. The operations usually involved defensive actions to down the ballistic missiles aimed at Israel. However, Britain initially refused to hand permission to the US to use its base this time round for its war against Iran. Despite the fact that the UK is not involved in the ongoing war against Iran, its military assets are still being targeted. The decision has now been changed and the US will be able to use British bases.
A previous missile that landed near Cyprus was thought to have been aimed at US naval assets in the Mediterranean Sea. However, yesterday before the attack on Cyprus, Britain also downed an Iranian Shahed drone in Qatar. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also announced that anti-air defence specialists from Ukraine will be working with British teams in the Gulf to build anti-air defence strategies and systems in the region.
