The left’s partisan folly of comparing Donald Trump with Vladimir Putin

The left is regularly comparing US President Donald Trump with Vladimir Putin, often even saying that Trump is worse than Putin out of sheer ideological enmity. This comparison is banal, odious and reductive. I’m writing this because the Times of Malta made this comparison today and such comparison has also been made by the UK’s Green Party Leader Zach Polanski.

Polanski’s enmity against Donald Trump is ideological, partisan and banal and not rooted from any genuine concerns. Polanski wants the UK to exit NATO and establish good relations with Vladimir Putin. This is strange and inconsistent with his position to abrogate UK ties with Israel over its genocide in Gaza.

Vladimir Putin is waging a literal imperialist war on Ukraine committing an ongoing genocide in Ukraine by displacing Ukrainians from their land and replacing them with ethnic Russians. 100,000 Ukrainians have been killed and disappeared from Mariupol alone. You can conjure as many as academic “post-colonial theories of imperialism” as much as you like, but fundamentally illegal wars are not all equal and if you think that the US war on Iran is “imperialistic” by traditional and actual imperialists measures, I have a Chinese bridge to sell you.

As always, the left’s fascination with “Anti-Western dictatorships” trumps the legitimate aspirations of the people being oppressed by the same anti-western dictators. There’s no rational with individuals obsessed with partisan leftism because every Tom, Dick and Dictator is better than a Republican President. This is total ideological obfuscation. It’s fascinating how traditional and revolutionary leftism transformed from anti-dictatorial activity to a politics of human rights for dictators who torture and imprison their people. Dialectics are so dead, that God is back.

Ultimately, US President Donald Trump is bad for Europe because he wants to weaken Europe and bring it closer to Russia. Trump himself is abetting old-fashioned imperialism by empowering dictatorships. Ironically, Trump himself was elected with the help of Russia and its propaganda machine and he has served Vladimir Putin’s interests perfectly well by pressuring Ukraine to capitulate, weakening the Trans-Atlantic Alliance, and even giving him sanctions-reprieves during the war on Iran. How is this “worse than Putin” if Trump is in fact an extension of Putin’s interests?

Everyone knows that Donald Trump is bad for Europe, that he is a rapist, bad for humanity, probably a pedophile and also someone who protected other pedophiles extensively. We don’t need bigots to tell us this with their hyperbolic stupidities.
