Earlier today, Times of Malta published an investigation into the history of Edmond Saliba, the man identified as the operator and licence holder of the Lourdes Hamas-like fireworks room that exploded in Naxxar. The factory is the Lourdes Fireworks Factory, owned by the Lourdes San Ġwann band club.
The Labour Party’s proposed Judge for Chief Justice, Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera was the judge who reduced the fine handed to Edmond Saliba over illegal fireworks activity and the burning of protected Maltese trees. She also allowed him to keep his fireworks licence despite a history of wild behaviour and illegalities.
The decision on whether to allow an individual found guilty of illegal fireworks practices to keep their licence is at the discretion of the Xourt, and Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera allowed him to keep his.
Now, Labour’s apologists will describe this as an attack against the Judiciary and whatnot. They will also say that no one could have predicted the explosion in Naxxar.
However, it was predictable, and the history of the individual who is seemingly responsible for the explosion showed a track record of illegal and destructive behaviour.
In addition, it is important to point out the judge in particular for the very important reason that the Labour Party is spreading a culture of impunity. Judges who have a connection with Labour are more likely to transcribe the Labour Party’s policies and ideology into their work. The influence is very clear.
What is also worrying is that the ongoing magisterial inquiry into the fireworks explosion is being led by Magistrate Joe Mifsud, who is known for his populist tendencies and fondness of Labour’s culture of impunity with regard to “hobbies” and “traditions”.
The fight for total criminal impunity and no accountability is ongoing, with the hunting lobby raising its pressure. This is a toxic situation where criminals and opportunistic idiots are being allowed to cause extensive damage to our country on the back of the government’s populist tendencies.
