Son of slain journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, Matthew said that he expects a re-trial of Yorgen Fenech after Fenech was acquitted 8 to 1 by a jury over charges that he conspired for the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia and criminal association.
Yorgen Fenech admitted on record that he “okayed” and paid for the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. He also admitted to having paid a total of €400,000 to the her killers who are spending life sentences in jail.
Matthew Caruana Galizia, who has worked on his mother’s case extensively and followed all the cases in Court, said that he doesn’t want the Police to pick-up leads by professional liars and that the evidence is clear that it was Yorgen Fenech who commissioned the hit.
Therefore, he said, he expects a re-trial and added that government must overcome its shock and accept the facts at hand.
Irregularities revealed about the jury and the trial may provide the Prosecutor with strong grounds for appeal.
