Ever since Alexandre Dreyfus, the billionaire mega-shitcoin-salesman, bought Lovin Malta, known to us as Cartoon Network, many have kept questioning his real intentions. Today, we are already seeing changes being made in the editorial and content of the outlet that are definitely brought as a result of his involvement.
Recently, Lovin Malta published a very bizarre pro-Turkish foreign policy article. The article gives you a strong sense of cognitive dissonance as it is published in an outlet with literal fake news and ridiculous clickbait (such as a literal fake a story stating that Lady Gaga was in Malta). Maybe, this is how they promote foreign policy to Gen Z.
From Lovin Malta to Lovin Turkey. Alexandre Dreyfus is telling the Maltese through his new media entity that we have to respect Turkey, and apparently, this includes Turkey’s regular foreign policy demands such as acknowledging Turkey’s position that the Kurds are terrorists, that we should accept their demands in Cyprus and treat them like a regional power. The usual and regular stuff Turkish diplomats would tell you in any conference, yet we are now being told this stuff by Cartoon Network.
So, basically, Lovin Malta has an editorial policy against the Kurds and their right to sovereignty. The main gist of the article is that in order to support the democratic movement in Turkey we have to recognise the Kurds as terrorists.
The Kurds are one of the most underrepresented peoples in the world, in the press, and international politics. Their plight and their demands for sovereignty are legitimate. Turkey has regularly bombed and killed Kurdish civilians as of earlier this year before the Syrian government signed a peace and integration agreement with the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces. The Kurds have been victims of ethnic cleansing several times in history, but have recently obtained a degree of autonomy in Iraq and Syria following their resistance against ISIS which operated freely from inside Turkey to attack the Kurds. The Kurds were essential for the defeat against ISIS, the stability of Syria and the removal of Bashar al-Assad from power especially by denying him the lucrative oilfields in Deir Ezzor.
Turkey is indeed an important European security ally. Turkey also provided crucial help to Jolani’s forces before capturing Damascus, it is currently countering Russian influence in Libya by supporting the legitimate government of Tripoli, and is also supporting the fight of the Sudanese Army against the genocidal Rapid Support Forces.
Turkey does act and serve as a force for good in many cases, but this does not mean that we have to accept Turkey’s crimes, or its abuses. Neither should we stop speaking about these abuses in order to somehow strategically help democratic forces in Turkey win power. Absurd.
There is no doubt that of Turkey’s current importance in Europe’s security architecture. Turkey’s work to safeguard and support legitimate governments in Sudan and Libya as opposed to dealing with murderous terrorists or dictators, helps international peace and security. On the other hand, Turkey’s work abroad does not absolve it from its crimes at home and in its region.
This article could be extended to further points. The Armenians also need a mention here. Turkey still does not recognise its own genocide against the Armenians during the First World: the Armenians and the Assyrians were blamed by the Turks for the failure of the Ottoman Empire in the First World War and were subsequently massacred. Today, Turkey supports its ally Azerbaijan that has a policy of Armenian ethnic cleansing.
To conclude, Turkey is not going to be granted any privileges, especially by us at The Maltese Herald. We will keep reporting on Turkey and matters related to it whether they are good or bad.
