President Trump blames Ukraine for Russia’s invasion: unclear whether US will sell Patriot missiles to Ukraine

During a press conference with El Salvador’s President, Nayib Bukele, President Donald Trump hinted that he may not be selling Patriot missiles to Ukraine following a deadly attack by Russia against Ukrainian civilians in Sumy. Ukraine has offered the US up to $15 billion to purchase 10 Patriot missiles that would help it defend itself against Russian missile strikes against cities and civilians.

Trump also blamed Ukraine for Russia’s invasion. Previously, President Trump also said that Russia’s attack on Sumy was “a mistake”. He denied knowing anything about the offer, but Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, announced that he made the offer directly to Trump himself, along with his government officials, through the relevant entities.

During the press conference, President Trump denied he will be repatriating back Kilmar Abrego Garcรญa to the US, defying an order by the Supreme Court to do so. Kilmar Abrego Garcรญa had “protected status” in the US but the government accuses him of having links to criminal gangs. He has a wife and a child back in the US who are US citizens. Kilmar Abrego Garcรญa is currently being held in a “maximum-security prison” of El Salvador intended to house deadly gang members.

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has forged a good relationship with President Trump after he struck a deal with the US to accept deported El Salvadoran nationals to his country who are being imprisoned in maximum-security prisons. At the start of the press conference, Bukele encouraged Trump to imprison certain individuals, stating that some people need to be imprisoned in order to liberate others.
