The Rapid Support Forces (Janjaweed) genocidal militias have killed up to 500 people in the refugee camp of Zamzam outside of Al-Fashir. Up to 400,000 people have fled the camp. Al-Fashir is resisting a takeover by the RSF and is one of the last cities in the west of the country that has not fallen to them. The RSF are funded and supported by the United Arab Emirates.
The RSF took over the camp last week after it fled from the city of Khartoum. In Zamzam, the RSF are also capturing women, raping them, and torturing them to death, with at least 14 women known to have suffered this fate. The rape and torture of women is a hallmark of the RSF’s actions. The RSF regularly retaliates by killing civilians after they suffer military defeats.
The US government has condemned the actions of the RSF in Zamzam including the killing of nine aid workers. It urged the RSF to allow the passage of humanitarian aid and uphold international law.
