US Vice-President JD Vance follows the Italian Premier to Rome: shows up at St Peter’s Basilica

The Trump Administration is literally going out of its way to make sure it shows its audience that it is Catholic. The US Vice-President JD Vance followed the Italian Premier, Giorgia Meloni, to Rome after she had just visited the White House and met with the President himself. In a statement from Palazzo Chigi, the Vice-President said that he was in Rome to update the premier in person about talks that took place in Paris between the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The US Vice President attended Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica following his meeting with the Italian Prime Minister, causing traffic jams and disruptions in central Rome and near the US Ambassador’s residence. JD Vance’s wife, Usha Vance, who is a practicing Hindu, accompanied her husband to Mass.

The US Vice-President is a “born-again Christian” having converted to Catholicism in 2019, saying he liked the Church for being “very old”. He was raised as a Christian Evangelical. Today, he admires Saint Augustine, the Bishop of Hippo, who was one of the most influential Christian theologians of the 4th and 5th centuries. However, Christian theological thought continued to develop throughout the ages with many Christian and Catholic theologians contesting the works of St. Augustine.

On March 5th, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio appeared on Fox News to discuss Ukraine and Russia while wearing a cross on his forehead. The cross was marked as part of traditional Ash Wednesday celebrations, a practice performed during Mass. It is highly unusual, however, to continue wearing the cross in public settings after the ceremony.
