Tomorrow Ħamrun Spartans will be playing a match against Maccabi Tel Aviv at Toni Bezzina Stadium in Paola at 7PM. The game is part of the UEFA Europa League.
The Police have stated that they will be ready for any disturbances and would immediately arrest any suspect.
Moviment Graffitti issued a statement denouncing that the game is taking place considering Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza and raised public safety concerns about the match.
The Maccabi Tel Aviv football club is renowned as a far-right football club in Israel with its fans regularly causing acts of hooliganism and disturbances whenever they travel to support their team. In November of last year, Maccabi Tel Aviv fans caused unrest and terror in the streets of Amsterdam before they were beaten back by Moroccan taxi drivers. The Israeli government defended the hooliganism of the Maccabi fans by victimising them and said that a “pogrom” took place against them. Israel used the events in Amsterdam to spread racism against Muslims in Europe and stir racial tensions.
I find it repulsive that these pieces of trash are coming to my country, but to be objectively fair, Malta can’t be expected to be the only country to exclude itself from the Europa League in protest against the far-right Maccabi Tel Aviv. UEFA should have made sure to ban this team ever since their fans started acting like the barbarian imbeciles that they are. Now, thanks to UEFA’s inaction, we are compelled to be charitable enough to host them in our country.
On the other hand, Israel committed an act of terror off Malta’s coast, and Malta should have long addressed this issue accordingly.
