Watch: Second turtle nest at Ramla Bay begins to hatch

Another milestone in Malta’s turtle nesting season has been reached, as the second nest at Ramla l-Ħamra in Gozo has started to hatch. Conservationists confirmed that last night around 50 hatchlings from what is the fourth nest of the season successfully made their way to the sea.

Volunteers from Nature Trust – FEE Malta, supported by ERA officials, were on site to monitor the event and ensure the safety of the newborn turtles as they crossed the sand. Visitors at Ramla Bay were urged to cooperate by keeping noise to a minimum, avoiding the use of artificial light near the nesting area, and respecting the instructions of volunteers stationed on the beach.

This latest hatching follows the recent emergence of 26 hatchlings from the first nest of the season at Ġnejna Bay, signalling the start of an active nesting and hatching period across Maltese beaches. Conservation groups are reminding the public that their collaboration remains vital if these protected species are to thrive.

Thanks to ongoing efforts, Malta is witnessing one of its most successful turtle nesting seasons in years, with each hatching adding to the islands’ growing conservation story.
