The headquarters building of the Italian press outlet La Stampa in Turin, was ransacked and vandalised by pro-Palestinian protestors during a day protestors described as “a general strike” for Palestine. Protestors demanded that Italy stops its weapons exports to Israel. Italy already suspended all new weapons exports to Israel in late 2023 and halted ongoing weapons exports later in 2024. Some indirect exports still remain ongoing.
Around protestors broke into the offices last Friday art around 2PM chanting Free Palestine, vandalising the offices. They also defaced walls and threw manure at the gates. The offices were empty when the attack took place and no was hurt.
The Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the attack and condemned anyone who inferred that journalists were to blame for this attack. Earlier, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese condemned journalists when asked about the attack, saying that journalists don’t know anything about Palestine and Hamas. However she condemned the attack on the press and said that protests should be non-violent.
Francesca Albanese has been a major advocate for Hamas even describing them as a legitimate political force in Palestine. Hamas imposed a brutal authoritarian rule on Palestinians in Gaza, sacrificed their own people for a genocidal war they lost, and have recently conducted a major campaign of purges and mass killings against Palestinians it describes as traitors.
