Iran repression deepens crisis โ MEP Daniel Attard.
EU Socialists call for tougher sanctions and reform.
The protests unfolding across Iran are not isolated incidents, but the result of long-standing social, economic, and generational grievances that cannot be resolved through repression or force. The Vice-President of the European Parliamentโs Delegation for Relations with Iran and MEP Daniel Attard stressed that sustainable stability can only be achieved through dialogue, reform, and respect for fundamental rights.
Systematic repression by the Iranian authorities, he warned, may suppress dissent temporarily but only deepens instability and entrenches structural failures, particularly affecting younger generations demanding opportunity, dignity, and a credible future. Condemning violence against peaceful protesters, Attard said condemnation alone is no longer sufficient. He called for structured, transparent, and verifiable dialogue mechanisms capable of translating legitimate public demands into concrete reform, with the participation of civil society and independent actors. Attard urged the European Commission and the international community to act decisively in line with repeated European Parliament resolutions, including by expanding and rigorously enforcing targeted sanctions against those responsible for serious human rights violations, and by advancing the Parliamentโs call to list the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation.
He also called for stronger support for Iranian civil society and independent media, and for all EU engagement with Iran to be strictly conditioned on measurable human rights benchmarks. โOur objective is not confrontation for its own sake, but a principled path toward reform that serves the long-term interests of Iran and its citizens,โ Attard said, reaffirming the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democratsโ commitment to supporting the Iranian people.
