Prime Minister expects an official rejection by the Opposition of his nomination for Chief Justice

The Prime Minister is demanding that the Opposition formally reject his nomination of Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera for Chief Justice, officially and in writing. The Labour Party and its allies is already running a campaign obfuscating the issue by claiming political discrimination.

The Opposition did not accept the Prime Minister’s nomination but did not stress this explicitly. The Opposition Leader is asking for private discussions to arrive at a compromise. The approval of the nomination for the post of Chief Justice requires two-thirdsย  approval by Members of Parliament.

Discussions are stalled with these official letters currently being the only contribution being made to the discussion about the post for Chief Justice. The Labour government already fully controls the Office of the Attorney General and the Police, and controlling the post of Chief Justice as well would give Labour near-absolute control over the Justice system.
