President Zelensky reiterates he can’t give up his people to Russia

In an interview with Sky News focusing mainly on the ongoing negotiations between Ukraine and Russia as mediated by the United States, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated that he cannot give up his people to Russia, once again stressing that he cannot cede territory.

The Ukrainian president said that Ukrainians do not want to be Russian and that, if they refuse to become Russian, they would be banished from their lands. He implied that giving up territory would therefore be equivalent to condemning his own people. Russia is currently ethnically cleansing Ukrainians from the territories that it has occupied.

President Zelensky also denied that Ukraine is getting a nuclear weapon from France and Britain. The Ukrainian President supports the acquisition of nuclear weapons in the lack of security guarantees by Western states. Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons to Russia in exchange for security assurances from the West, as signed in the Budapest Memorandum in 1994.

Ongoing negotiations with Russia are not being productive as Ukraine refuses territorial concessions and Russia retains its maximalist demands.
