Joseph Muscat’s minions are coming out in force to defend him over his communication and association with Yorgen Fenech in 2019 during the investigation of Fenech over the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. The extensive association and collaboration between Yorgen Fenech and Keith Schembri has already been documented and Keith Schembri’s sharing of confidential police information with Yorgen Fenech went beyond Daphne’s case.
Keith Schembri sought to control Melvin Theuma, the main witness in the case against Yorgen Fenech and this has already been documented as well. Keith Schembri even told Yorgen Fenech explicitly that he was protecting Deputy Police-Commissioner Silvio Valletta, who in turn, was protecting and colluding with Yorgen Fenech whilst Fenech was being investigated.
A new fact that was revealed in Court yesterday via the testimony of the lead investigator Keith Arnaud is that the disgraced ex-Prime Minister Joseph Muscat told Keith Arnaud that Melvin Theuma was to be arrested while Keith Schembri and Yorgen Fenech discussed tweaking Melvin Theuma’s pardon.
This type of collusion with the Mafia is unprecedented in history and not just in Malta. What is even more unprecedented is that Joseph Muscat and Keith Schembri have avoided charges and prosecution over collusion with organised crime when the prima facie evidence exists in an extensive manner.
The prosecution has consistently stated that it is currently focusing on one suspect, with the aim of securing his conviction. It has also maintained that there was only one mandator behind the assassination: Yorgen Fenech.
It is not my intention to criticse the prosecution in this case, and neither to give any rope to Yorgen Fenech who desperately wants to try to pin the murder onto Chris Cardona and Keith Schembri. The prosecution’s strategy will hopefully pay off, but the fact remains that Yorgen Fenech was abetted and aided directly by Castille, namely the Prime Minister and his Chief of staff. This is a statement of fact based on extensively published prima facie evidence.
Whether the Police will keep protecting and shielding Joseph Muscat and Keith Schembri from this case needs to be seen in the case Yorgen Fenech is convicted, but I a not holding my breath. Today, it is the incumbent Prime Minister who is protecting the disgraced ex-Prime Minister and his associates, effectively protecting politicians who abetted and protected an alleged murderer and terrorist.
Then there is also the likelihood of Yorgen Fenech taking to scorched earth in case if he is convicted.
Unfortunately, this trial took too long to take place and the delay has served Keith Schembri and Joseph Muscat well. The country and ultimately journalists don’t remain safe as long as the abettors of a murderer of a journalist roam free and conduct their business.
