There was nothing new or revealing about the Times of Malta interview with Melvin Theuma yesterday, but the interview also comes as Yorgen Fenech’s defence team and his supporters increase their public efforts to defend Yorgen Fenech by throwing shade on Melvin Theuma.
Yorgen Fenech’s defence team has tried to bely Melvin Theuma by defaming him and attacking his character to ultimately try to convince the jurors and the public that Melvin Theuma was accusing Yorgen Fenech to protect other people such as Keith Schembri.
Yorgen Fenech admitted on record to the Police of commissioning the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia and giving up to €400,000 to Melvin Theuma to pass on to the hitmen of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Despite Yorgen Fenech’s admissions, Melvin Theuma’s version has been contradicted on some small details and Yorgen Fenech’s defence insists that Melvin Theuma is protecting others in the murder and putting all the blame on Yorgen Fenech.
Let’s make one thing clear. Even if Melvin Theuma was protecting Keith Schembri and was not telling the full truth, this does not in any exculpate Yorgen Fenech whose main narrative and story by Melvin Theuma about Yorgen Fenech commissioning the murder being corroborated by Yorgen Fenech’s own admission.
There is one fact that has not been disclosed publicly about Melvin Theuma which I think is important about his current state of mind and character. Melvin Theuma is the equivalent of a full-time Mafia pentito collaborating with the Police. He is essentially a Police asset. Melvin Theuma did not disclose to the Police only details about the case of Yorgen Fenech. Melvin Theuma disclsoed to the Police very extensive and revealing information and intelligence on Malta’s criminal underworld leading to valuable intelligence on multiple other cases especially cases related to drugs.
Melvin Theuma transitioned from the world of crime to a full-time Mafia pentito and is fully retired from his criminal activities. He may refuse to disclose details about specific persons, but he is no longer an active criminal and his capability for crime has been reduced significantly due to the constant police surveillance. As a full-time pentito he is expected to collaborate and cooperate with the Police and so far, his cooperation with the Police was consistently valuable.
It is pointless and even redundant to attack Melvin Theuma’s character. We all know who Melvin Theuma is and what he did. Attacking his character as he provides evidence to the Police is ultimately made in the interest of those who want to discard his evidence.
