Pope Francis passes away on Easter Monday

Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff and a transformative figure in the modern history of the Roman Catholic Church, has died at the age of 88. His passing was confirmed by the Vatican in a video statement released Monday morning. Pope Francis had experienced health issues in recent months, including a long stay at the hospital with bilateral pneumonia.

At 9:45 am on Easter Monday, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, spoke these words at the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta:

“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, ascended to the papacy in 2013, becoming the 266th pope and the first Jesuit to hold the position. His 12-year papacy was marked by bold attempts to reform the Church, often facing resistance from traditional factions. He championed social justice, environmental stewardship, and inclusivity, while also confronting internal scandals and global crises. Pope Francis also sparked debate within the Church over issues ranging from the inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community in the Church to the role of women.

He is remembered by many Catholics as a humble Pope who spoke for the poor, the vulnerable, and the marginalised. His final visit was to Regina Coeli Prison, where he said he could not understand why it was they, and not he, who had to suffer that fate.

Further details on funeral arrangements and succession procedures are expected in the coming days.
