Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Pope Leone XIV and the Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni yesterday during his European tour. Previously he was in London meeting with leaders of the UK, France and Germany before he traveled to Brussels to meet with EU and NATO leaders.
European leaders are set to propose a counter-plan to the US-Kremlin Pact. In an interview with Politico, President Trump is insisting that Russia has the upper-hand in its war on Ukraine and European leaders are too weak in their actions especially with regard to sanctions. While President Trump is putting pressure on President Zelensky top capitulate, Russia is putting the pressure on Ukraine by bombing cities and killing civilians.
President Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine will give no territorial concessions, but speaking to the Ukrainian media, he also said that Ukraine does not have the military means to recapture Crimea at the moment.
In his meeting with the Pope Leone XIV, President Zelensky thanked the Pope for his advocacy for prisoners of war and the return of Ukrainian children. The Pope offered to help in mediation efforts with Russia but when speaking to the press refrained from commenting on the US-Kremlin Pact. The Pope also warned that President Donald Trump and his team are breaking the Trans-Atlantic Alliance and that the alliance between the US and Europe should be preserved. His comments contrasted with President Trump’s comments who echoed the US National Security Strategy that condemns mainstream European parties on “civilizational erasure”.
On the other hand, Premier Meloni is insisting that Europe and the US agree on one plan for Ukraine. Italy is withdrawing its military support for Ukraine after having withdrawn from the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List purchase programme. Italy has retained its infrastructural support to Ukraine.
