The meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov earlier today in Saudi Arabia was focused on Russian rapprochement, after last week President Zelensky ruled out any capitulation deal imposed by the US on Ukraine. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio pledged to Minister Lavrov that the US would lift sanctions on Russia following a peace deal with Ukraine. They also discussed the lifting of diplomatic sanctions which is ongoing.
A statement issued by the US State Department following the meeting announced that the US seeks to work with Russia in mutual “geopolitical interests” and investment opportunities in Ukraine. President Trump wants 50% of Ukraine’s rare minerals, a proposal which President Zelensky rejected. The statement is also blatantly implying that the US is more interested in exploiting investment opportunities in Ukraine together with Russia instead of seeking Ukraine’s best interest.
The US Secretary of State didn’t have any authority to speak ion behalf of Ukraine, but proposed some ideas to Minister Lavrov such as agreeing to a halt on attacks on civilian energy sites, to which Minister Lavrov said that they don’t target civilians or civilian sites. Russia has killed more than a hundred thousand of Ukrainian civilians in its invasion of Ukraine, and civilian sites with drones and missiles including power stations on a daily basis. The Russian also destroyed the Kakhovka Dam causing a natural disaster and displacing tens of thousands of people and recently also struck with a direct hit the outer casing of Chernobyl’s Reactor 4.
Secretary Rubio seemed very gravious with Minister Lavrov and did not oppose or criticse his comments. At the end of the meeting he gave very hopeful remarks about the future of the US and Russia relationships. He also stated that both Ukraine and Russia needed to make concessions but did not specify what concessions Russia should make.
